🎉📚 Meet Rita Burgess, our Board President! 📚🎉

Before joining the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library Board of Directors in 2019, she served on the Winnipeg Public Library Board for six years, two of which as chair! 🏛️👩‍💼 Rita is committed to sharing the happiness that libraries bring with everyone in Winnipeg.

Rita’s love for libraries began in her childhood. She fondly remembers reading in a big chair at the Gimli Library, overlooking the lake 📚🌊. She’s thankful for the library bookmobile that brought books to her children decades ago 🚌📚. Every library visit brings joy to Rita’s heart ❤️.

When she’s not leading our board or advocating for libraries, you might find Rita cheering on the Bombers and Jets 🏈🏒, or enjoying a ballet or theatre performance 🩰🎭. She treasures family time and immersing herself in historical fiction novels 📖.
Outside of her work with the FWPL board and the Winnipeg Public Library, Rita is a financial planner with over 40 years of experience in the banking industry 💼. Let’s give a big round of applause for Rita! 👏

A huge thank you to Karin Borland, Manager of Library Services (WPL) for being the guest speaker at our Annual General Meeting, held April 27, 2024.

President, Rita Burgess & 2024 Book Sale Event Manager, Laurie Sodomlak were thrilled to present a cheque for $20,000, our latest donation to the Winnipeg Public Library. These funds will be allocated to Programs and Special Projects, including the Writer-In Residence Program. This brings our total donations to WPL, since 2000, to over $391,000!

We are able to make this donation because of the very successful Book Sale event!! So big thank you to the supporters of the FWPL!
